(Val/Brad) * Did Van Halen record more than 2 songs with Roth for either B-Sides or a Box Set in the near future? * Was Roth under a trial period during the recording of these songs to retain his position again? Or did the band have their minds set already on looking for another singer? * If Roth didn't screw up was there a possible chance of a short reunion Tour? (I was ready to take some vacation and catch some shows, considering the 5150 tour was my first show ever! I guess I might have to wait for the Rock N Roll Inductions to the Hall Of Fame in 2003: 3 Singers) * Who else tried out for the singer job? * Is Extreme going to release a Greatest Hit album, Live album, B-sides E.P? Well, there goes my second favorite band breaking up (Extreme). I saw them 12 times and we will not be disappointed with Gary as the singer. You people over seas might get to see a Van Halen show now :) First Favorite Band of course is Van Halen (Roth). In My Opinion, David Lee Roth acted as himself at the VMA. He is a showman/entertainer. You can't hate him for who he is. I've had the honor of meeting him at a Grand Opening of a HMV Store in Boston 9/94 (Called in sick from work that day!) I wish VH did a meet and greet get together like Kiss did on their Kiss Alive III album for their FANS. What they did was, They had a new video coming out and if you bought any of their tapes/cds/videos at a Strawberries store, you got a pass to meet them at a venue that holds about 1,000 to 1,500 people, while they played the new video. Again, We will not be disappointed with Gary! Joe * We should get a partition together stating we would like Eddie to use the beginning riff form "Eyes Of The Night" in a future Song. The Partition work for Dream Theater (My 3rd Favorite Band). Dream Theater played a 23 minute long song in concert on their Images and Words Tour, which was a song they wrote for the album but never released it. The Fans on the Dream Theater mailing list got a partition together and the Drummer Mike P. is a subscriber to the list (like Val is) and informed the band and they recorded it for an E.P. Just as I didn't want to hear Sammy do Dave era songs, or Dave do Sammy era songs. IMO, this is a lose, lose situation. The only thing that would've made it enticing is a tour with Dave, bringing the old stuff out of the closet. We've been hearing the Sammy era stuff for the last decade. Now VH is like a bar band doing cover songs and sneeking in a few originals (Cherone) here and there. It'll be that way until there is enough Cherone era material that they can neglect the Dave and Sammy era music. Yes, I love the music, but it's more than that to me. I need some stability, not the flavor of the month. Sorry, I'm not trying to be spiteful, I just don't like the way this thing turned out. There are so many flames on that sucker I thought my screen was going to catch fire! Something tells me it may not be there for long. I mean, it ain't exactly helping *promote* the GH album. Most people are telling Dave, Ed, and/or Sammy they suck. My guess is AFTER the release of the album!!!!! You were gonna use us fans but Dave saved us from that!!!!!!!!!!!FUCK YOU! - ---------- ------------------------------ From: Top Jimmy Date: Sat, 05 Oct 1996 16:18:28 -0700 Subject: I'm Dave for a moment! OK, I'm going to be DAVE for a minute!!! I decided to bury the hatchet with the boys after 11 years. Man we had some good times and made some great music! I wish I didn't make the bone-headed decision 11 years ago to go solo, but ain't hindsight 20/20. Oh well, we needed a brake from each other anyway, things we're getting a bit stale and there was a lot of tension. I decided to call Eddie a make peace, but I got the damn answering machine. Do I leave a message or call back latter. Well I left a message and Eddie was gracious enough to call me back! We talked about a lot of stuff and then Eddie suggested I come down to 5150 and do a song or two for the Best Of Vol. 1. When I got there we spoke in the studio for a while and then Al and Mike showed up! They didn't know I was going to be there and Al looked as if he'd seen a ghost. We spoke for several hours and it felt good to be there. Eddie told me today that he'd consider letting me audition for my old spot, but nothing is guarenteed. He wants to try some other people out too. Well, I don't blame him. I walked out on him 11 years ago and he needs to be assured that I'm not going to do it again. Let's face it, my solo career started out hot, but then I ended up in Vegas.....Wow, did that really happen. Lord knows I've eaten my share of humble pie. It took a couple of extra takes to finish my vocals as I'm a little out of practice. Oh well, what's a couple extra takes when you get the results of MWM & CGTSNM! I'll definately have to get a vocal coach to rehibilitate my voice for a tour, and I'll go to the gym and work on my kicks (martial arts). I can do that while Eddie's recovering from hip surgery. Well, I guess Ed's still trying out other guys. Man, he dosn't trust me? He wants to put me through the ringer to make sure I know that this position isn't here for my convenience. The chemestry is still there and these new songs are like magic! Now it's a matter of trust? Today I was informed that MTV wants us to come and present an award. The four of us as Van Halen! I'm always up for a public appearance, but I don't think it would be a good idea unless I'm here to stay. It would be wrong to give a fasle impression of what's really going on. I told the guys me feelings, but I've got to cooperate and go or I'll have blown my oportunity to rejoin the mighty VH. Wow man!!!! What a response from the crowd tonight at the MVA. They are as pumped as I am about this reunion! Ed must really be starting to trust me if he brought me out in public. This is great! I want to put my heart and soul back into the greatest band in the world -- Van Halen. I went on the Howard Stern show today. Man, I'm so pumped up about this reunion, but Eddie wasn't thrilled about me doing the show -- I wonder why? We just appeared in public together. Everything has been going great! The way the fans responded to us! The new songs are great -- like magic. I'm even getting along with Val. I can't believe he hasn't said let's do it yet. Man, he really want to make sure I'm staying put, but we're closer now than we've ever been. Where going to take a break now. I'm going to work on getting in shape for a tour, while Ed continues to write and prepare for surgery. This break will give me a chance to get my voice in shape. Although I pulled a muscle in my leg the other day doing jumps. Ed asked my what I was doing and I responded "getting in shape for the tour." Ed responded "what tour?" I'm getting an icy grip in my stomach. During our break, I've been reading the papers and magazines, and watching the tv shows. People are really jazzed about this! Entertainment weekly said I came back just in time! Eddie said an album and a tour would be coming in '97 (he never said it was Dave, perhaps it was an evasive quote that could have been easily misunderstood). And in another publication it says he's still trying out people. Man, I'm the people's choice. I'm the original singer. Are chemestry is there. Why's he doing this. Trust me Ed, I'm not going anywhere. I've learned my lesson -- forgive and forget. You won't find anyone better than me for the job. Aw, I'm alright, we're doing two videos in a couple of weeks, I must have the job? Wow!! What's this. Gary Cherone named the new lead singer of VH. Oh my god! When did this happen, this can't be true. I'm going to call SRO and find out what the hell is going on here. It's true, Cherone and Ed are working on new material -- maybe as early as August 30th according to the Extreme fan club. Man, all this time it felt like I was in, but something didn't feel right. Now I know why. Man I wanted this thing bad, it was like rapture. I should've paid better attention to my senses. I NEVER had a shot at the job. It was total bullshit! If it wasn't, why wouldn't I have it? I'm the original singer -- the people's choice -- and we're already working together and appearing together in public. And next week we were supposed to do the videos. What are they thinking? So they were going to leave me in the dark, at least until I did the videos. Man that's low. They want me to do videos while I'm assuming that I've got a shot at the job, and the whole time another lead singer is up at 5150 working on seven new songs. Man, they NEVER intended to keep me. Ain't paybacks a bitch! I'm taking my bat and glove and heading home. Oh yeah, I should apologize to the fans. I feel as bad as they do right now. I think I'll go write a letter. (Just throwing together some stuff from the list....not particularly well written. Off to the Oregon vs UCLA game!!!!) Jimmy ------------------------------ End of Van Halen Digest V1 #709
