Pat Badger's letter, and NERF HERDER ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Andrew Eckhart Date: Tue, 8 Oct 1996 21:32:27 -0500 Subject: What does the band mean to you? Well, I've been in lurk mode, more or less for a while because my schedule says so, but I have been reading a lot of the stuff everybody has been posting. There seems to be an even bigger split happening now; even worse than Dave vs. Sammy. and I just don't get it. God only knows pretty much everybody has splurged and written a big letter either praising or bitching out the band, but I really don't see why anybody should lose sleep over the matter. I'll admit I became a full fledge fan in 1984, and I was seriously bummed about not being able to see any more Dave stuff with them, but I knew that change is a part of life and is inevitable. I got into the Sammy stuff, and I still had my Van Halen, and life was good. Most bands would have folded after something like that. Jeesh, Ed sorta wanted to leave the band in 1981, so we're lucky we got what we did. In a day where bands can sell millions of their debut album and then disappear, I would think we should be grateful that we have a band that no matter what, still looks to be strong enough to weather any trend in music. Just look at the poor Extreme fanatics. They only have the four albums. Look at the Nirvana freaks. We, as Van Halen fans should be thankful to get anything. Yes, I bet the band feels the fans matter, because if we didn't buy anything, they wouldn't be able to do what they do, but I seriously doubt that it is in the best interest of anybody to be so over the edge about all of this that they freak out. At that point, I would suggest counseling. It's too much. Life is too short to get violently upset about this. Life will continue on, Van Halen will play music, and most of us will be doing the same work as always. I plan to enjoy what I can get, and I don't see why we can't all do the same. This list would be a lot more fun. - -- VH actually appeared with Dave in public?? He knew what was going on. The big boys were here. This was going to be a meeting of the five families. Mike knew he better hurry up, as he was expected at this meeting, besides, who else was going to serve dinner? Mike pulled the Ferrari into the stable, put the car cover on and started the long dash to his room in the servants quarters. Michael finally reached the servants quarters, opened the door and bolted to his room. Mike's room in the servants house is a modest, twenty by twenty feet room with a small bathroom and kitchenette. The walls are plastered with posters of well oiled Belgian muscle men, in various poses. Knowing he has little time, Michael quickly showers and gets dressed into a ill-fitting tuxedo style suit, as all the waiters are required to wear this outfit. After placing on his toupee and applying several dabs of Old Spice cologne to his cheeks and neck, Mike pours the bottle down his shorts and then races out the door heading across the courtyard to the servants entrance of Studio 5150. Mike enters the door and is standing in the kitchen of the banquet hall inside 5150. The head waiter, Tony, sees Mike and motions for him to come over and get his assigned tables and to learn what the specials are for tonight's dinner/meeting. After twenty tries and seven false starts, Mike has the dinner specials almost memorized. Tony with meat cleaver raised above his head, not used to such incompetence, is being held back by seven members of the kitchen staff. Tony pops several of his blood pressure pills and starts to relax. Mike and the rest of the wait staff get into a huddle and clasp hands. They say a little motivational prayer and end it with a Marine style "Woo - Ah". The wait staff, including Mike, head through the doors that seperate the kitchen from the banquet area. The Van Halens have spared no expense in the building and design of this room where they can entertain up to three hundred guests in one sitting. From the Italian marble floors to the platinum, jewel encrusted chandeliers that hang from the hand painted cathedral ceilings, the Van Halens wanted only the best. Upon entering the lavish, ornate banquet hall, Mike could see the heads of the "Five Rock & Roll Sell-Out Families", seated at the main table. The other tables were filled with subordinates and VIPs invited by Don Van Halen and Alex. The five families are made up of: (1) The Van Halen Family: Godfather - Edward Van Halen. Consigliere - Ray Daniels. The strongest of the five families, they take a cut from all the other families. (2) The Michaels Family: Godfather - Bret Michaels. Consigliere - Lita Ford. They control the garment district, sanitation removal. (3) The Perry Family - Godfather - Joe Perry. Consigliere - Richie Sambora. They control gambling, narcotics (4) The Osbourne Family: Godfather - Ozzie Osbourne. Consigliere - Nikki Sixx. They control prostitution, extortion (5) The Journey Family: Godfather - Steve Perry. Consigliere - Neil Shon They are into strong arm, and torture, mainly using their own recordings. Also invited to the meeting of all meetings, are special VIPs, most notably, the dark lord of the underworld, Satan himself, who is here to present Ed with a Life Time Achievement Award. Mike, works the room, offering tasty treats to the distinguished guests. He is pinching himself to prevent any ill-timed twitch, as he is determined to have a show-down with Ed. ------------------------------ From: Thomas Bell Date: Tue, 08 Oct 1996 20:15:31 -0700 Subject: AHhhh, A Fresh Infusion of VH Finally back, After missing 3 days of 300 posts per day, I miss how interesting this list can be compared to snoozers like the Springsteen or U2 lists. No dice here, Kinison's routine consisted of continuous swear, something Candy never had to resort to, to get a laugh. I'd give you this one hands down if you'd have chosen Bill Cosby (now, there's talent!). > > Martin Short - Steve Martin You win this one hands down. > This list could go on and on. Personally, I'd put Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, Jack Nichlson and Nicholas Cage in the same group. > All I'm trying to say is that the music/film/supermodel industry would not dry up > > and die if the Canadian input wasn't there. No arguement there, the US owns the entertainment industry, (with the exception of comedy). But, then if the US was not invovled I'm sure the industry wouldn't die either. > MULLY > And as for the 2 people that I didn't know, well just tell me who they are > and I'm sure I'll find someone better. Good Luck at finding an American player better then Lindros. Hey Val, did you know that EarthLink has access numbers in all 50 states? Funny how you never had to split when you worked on your other projects. Not to imply that there are any legal and/or public relations issues here that you might be having to deal with... >....I just wanted to say *thank you* to all of > the fans (and there are MANY) who have privately Emailed me and publicly > supported the band during Daves invective charade... He wants them to sound alternative (or Alanis-like). The whole alternative thing is that less is more. Well don't do that to Alex's drums! Fairbairn was the best they had! I wish they kept him as Eddie said they would in '95. Erik PS. Not going all out to insult Ballard, but Aerosmith were very unhappy with his work on their new album and fired him some time ago. ------------------------------ From: "V. See ya, Erik ------------------------------ From: The Boogeyman Date: Wed, 9 Oct 1996 02:01:01 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Pat Badger's letter, and NERF HERDER Howdy all, You know with all the negativity in the press and around here of late regarding VH, Dave and Sammy it was REFRESHING to read Pat's letter. It's good to see that their are some level-headed AND eloquent survivors of a "post-mortem" band situation. Thanks for the enlightenment, Pat. I agree that things can only be good with Gary and VH -- I am (and have been) excited about the possibility of him fronting VH since the rumours began. Does anyone know what's next for Pat? Okay, everyone out there in list-land: forgive me for rehashing a previous topic, but has anyone heard the song "Van Halen" by Nerf Herder? Is it a good tune -- or is it nasty?
