Well, the only ones I know of are the Stormtrooper on the far right busting his head when he walks into the control room, the rodent at the bar who turns his head so you can see in one eye and out the other and when Luke yells "Carrie!" when the princess runs up to his ship at the end of the movie. All three of them are still in there! I had hoped that the rodent would be digitally "repaired" at the very least, but either nobody noticed or it was left in on purpose. I think that they may have further obscured the "Carrie" line, though, because the audio seemed a little different there. I wish I could rent a tape with just the Mos Eisley and final dogfight scenes. MULLY So, posted without any prior consent of Time Magazine: Keyboard Players Modems are the music industry's new mode of dishing rock stars and corp= orate suits. Trading on inside information, 'The Velvet Rope' has become an o= nline must-read. BY CHRIS WILLMAN ROPED IN: Van Halen, Bertinelli, Shakur, Love, and Roth (Photo illustration by Miriam Fishman) At last, people in the entertainment biz can say "My lips are sealed" a= nd mean it. These days, music-industry types who have trouble keeping confidenc= es are more likely to let their fingers do the squawking. The place to let it = all hang out, gossip-wise, is THE VERLVET ROPE, a limited-access, invitation-onl= y forum for music-industry professionals on America Online. Hundreds post on th= e bulletin board, while thousands lurk silently, hoping their names will = - or won't - come up amid the cyberbuzz, depending on whether it's Fat Tuesd= ay or Black Friday. Is Diamond Dave already back out of Van Halen? Why have so many top exe= cutives left Atlantic Records? Did Tupac bring his fate upon himself? Who's Cou= rtney sleeping with this week? Think of The Velvet Rope as a music-news outle= t with scores of eager cub reporters, most of whom dozed through their J-schoo= l ethics class, a few of whom might actually have the inside dope - pseudonymous= ly relayed, of course. Like it or not, this online rumor mill represents t= he democratization of =D2news,=D3 promising instant access (for those who = know the right keyword, anyway) to unedited, unsorted information and innuendo. If not everyone in the industry reads VR, practically all are aware of = it, if only because of the fires they have had to put out. Hootie's A&R execut= ive, Tim Sommer, for example, regularly posts to amend inaccurate statements abo= ut the Blowfish, and Mercury Records head Danny Goldberg has issued correction= s. Sony Music chief Thomas Mottola felt compelled to do an interview with Billb= oard last year just to deny rumors of firings being spread in the folder. Th= ough most rockers who visit stay in lurk mode, Courtney Love has dropped by = to squelch rumors - and start new ones. (It was here that Love pitted Mado= nna's Maverick Records and Alanis Morissette against everything she said Nirv= ana stood for: "It's a war - pick a side, a--hole.") A few weeks ago, Valer= ie Bertinelli made a special guest appearance to set the record straight o= n husband Eddie Van Halen's relationship with his group's off-and-on lead= singer, David Lee Roth. ("I can tell you for a fact that Ed does not 'have an i= ntense hatred' for Dave," she protested.) Who is it that gives 'em enough Rope? Three years ago, Julie Gordon, cu= rrently an A&R exec at the Enclave label, took over an informal music folder ca= lled Record Industry Dirt on AOL. Noting its immense popularity, AOL invited= Gordon to create an official site a year ago. Now AOL subscribers who type the= keyword "Flash" can gain access to her public bulletin board, but VR can be rea= ched only by application, which the folder's irascible doyenne must personal= ly approve. Gordon says VR is for anyone "from interns to CEOs." But cyberspace dem= ocracy is not for everyone. What exec wants to think the mail-room guy might k= now his VP stripes are history before he does? Management types have been known= to loathe the Rope for the misinformation it disseminates - though some no= doubt hate it even more when the chatter is accurate. "At this point The Velvet Rope is read by virtually everyone in the mus= ic industry," says Julie Farman, a PR chief formerly with Epic, now at Rev= olution. As far as she's concerned, that's not a good thing. "I really do hate i= t. It just amazes me the erroneous information that's been posted and then ac= cepted as fact. Journalists were taking it as fact." Because of hurtful things= written about a friend and some of her acts, Farman has stopped reading the for= um herself - though she admits that her assistant does keep an eye on it. = (Gordon officially discourages gossip about personal lives and occasionally del= etes posts she deems potentially libelous or that violate AOL guidelines.) If there's any reason why such an influential gossip folder exists for = the record industry but not for movie or TV insiders, it may be that the bu= siness of music attracts more impassioned employees.
