I'd rather see a spider that a cockroach! Okay, I tried not to let this thread get to me..but spiders?! Come on! After living in Hawaii for almost three years I really don't mind the spiders. In Hawaii they have flying cockroaches!! No joke! I had NEVER in my like seen roaches SO big, they were easily at least an inch those were the everyday ones...but once in awhile you would see those MOTHER ones, (trust me, they were almost Guiness size). Oh but thats just the begining, they also have centipedes, and yes they are poisonous! Ewww, just thinking about them gives me the creeps! We also had geckos which weren't really that bad once you got used to them, they are small lizards for those of you that don't know. They live in your house and just kinda roam. Hawaiians consider them good luck to have in your home and bad luck if you kill them. They are actually kinda cute, but they are really skittish and can startle you thats all. Only thing is, now my son wants to get a gecko but he doesn't understand that it has to go in a cage and can't just roam, oy! So lets just say that even though my fondness for spiders has not changed...they really don't seem like much of a bother anymore! Now we live in Oregon and have to deal with those black widow spiders, fun, fun! If any of you are sitting on expensive Windows-based noise reduction programs, copies loaned for "evaluation purposes" would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I am going to rely mainly on parametric EQ, notch filtering and compression/expansion for the remastering. It's still going to be a month or so before the project rolls (unless I hit a trifecta or something), but it looks pretty good from here. Some of you have already started the ball rolling by sending me lists of materials you are willing to contribute and I have all of your emails saved. I haven't forgotten anybody. We still could use a web page where we could put .wav snippets for fidelity comparison, but it's gonna have to have a lot of storage space. I understand that there is software that lets you use your hard drive as an ftp site if you maintain your net connection so maybe that's an option for someone. I dunno. Anyway, that's it for now. The interest seems to be there. And it's a cool project for listmembers who like to crank up the kind live from yesteryear. Soon. - -Rex ------------------------------ From: "Mark C. True, but some would argue he's been surpassed both in technique and songwriting. Now I think the man writes killer stuff! But there are some pretty damn good players out there. And some of the music on the last album was pretty mediocre, not to mention the ballads all sounding very similar... > Sammy's lyrical ability is questionable at best, and has been perhaps the only > discernible weakness in VH's music. O.K. That's a matter of opinion. Hagar's had some cheese, I'll grant you that. But he's done a more than adequate job the majority of the time. And his performances have been great, IMHO. What if it had been Mike? Say Sammy says he doesn't like what Mikey's doing and taps someone like Billy Sheehan for bass ideas. Mike ain't exactly a bass virtuoso. Some folks consider him the luckiest man in rock music for having the gig he has. I think he's somewhat under-rated as a bass player, but he does get stuck holding a pedal tone a lot. Anyway, I think it's more a matter of someone taking such a suggestion a bit personally. Kinda like, "I don't need you to tell me how to do my job." Whether someone's a Shakespeare or a Danielle Steel, you've got to take their feelings into consideration on something like this. It could be kind of a slap in the face depending on how it's handled. And in the context of the arts, it's even worse. Musicians' egoes can be very fragile. >From the interview, it didn't seem like Sammy really exploded when he was asked to collaborate. It may have stung a little, but he *did* collaborate with Fairbairn and Ballard. He *did* re-cut vocals multiple times. He tried to play ball, but the rules kept changing (and I don't balme Ed for this al all). > I hope that Sammy doesn't consider himself to be some sort of lyrical > mastermind. I mean, I *like* some of his lyrics, but would never put them on > a pedestal for comparison against, say, the lyrics of Dream Theater or Rush. No, he doesn't write deeper lyrics like Rush. Neither to the majority of other rock bands. And Rush has had their share of clunkers over the years (this coming from a pretty big Rush fan, too). Paul, Paul, Paul. Do you *really* think that CD Universe would have kept that ridiculously low price even if they hadn't been bombarded with orders from the VH list?? They probably figured out their error after the first couple of orders. We should be happy that at least a couple of people (bastards though they may be ;-)) ripped 'em off. Let's see what kind of >answers we get on this one. Explanations on why you're filtering this person >could be very interesting also. I use a combination of 5 different filters. One sends a particular list member's posts straight to the Trash folder. I don't have anything against the guy, but he joined the list a few months back, barrelling in here like he owned the joint. I didn't find any of his posts worth reading, so they get dumped. ;) I won't name him out of respect, but it's *not* BBB. ;P Actually, John Doe has slowed down his posts lately and I only see them when someone replies to one, which isn't very often. The other 4 filters route my mail to specific folders and assign color-coded tags based on who it's from. List mail is turned Red, personal mail remains black, Inside Mail is turned Blue and the subject is automatically changed to Inside Request if it's an order or catalog request and Cord Mail is green. Mail is then sorted in my inbox by label color with black being on top, followed by red, blue and green respectively. I think Sensible >Shoes + She's my machine mananged the top 50. None of those songs were actually released as singles in the U.S.. However, "A Little Ain't Enough" charted at #3 on Billboard's "Album Rock Chart," and "Sensible Shoes" and "Tell The Truth" charted at #6 and #39 respectively. I don't have information regarding his 1994 singles, sorry.
