Got back to over 2500 emails. I think I might consider getting a laptop!! hahaha. Anyway, part of my vacation consisted of visiting a couple Peavey facilities in Meridian, MS, since I was visiting relatives in Arkansas anyway. It was pretty cool. One of the places was the Peavey museum. They have a whole room dedicated to Ed stuff. A couple of the neat things is egyptian heirogliphics with pharoahs playing wolfgangs... cropmarks in England in the shape of a wolfgang.. and a constellation in the shape of a wolfgang. I thought it was clever. Lots of signed stuff (posters..etc.). I was hoping to check out some Peavey production facilities, but it didn't happen, and I didn't want to seem pushy. On my way home, I stopped and checked out the summer NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) trade show in Nashville, TN. That was definitely very cool. I checked out the Peavey booth of course. They haven't released the 5150 II heads yet, but they are going to very shortly. I also asked about my sunburst wolfgang on order. The rep said that Eddie hasn't approved the flamed top sunbursts yet, all the others, but not the sunburst. Got me?!?! I don't know why and he didn't either. So I guess I'll just be patient. Hey Brad!! Any chance you can ask Ed to take a moment and call Peavey and tell them to send me my guitar??!?!?! :o) Anyway, they also said that a new Peavey Cirrus "Michael Anthony" model is in the works. Look out for that one all you bass players!! Funny that Dave (Dave in CO) mentioned Paul Stanley. He has now switched from Ibanez to Washburn and he was onhand signing pics promoting his new axe. It's pretty cool. He's a really nice guy. I'm also a huge KISS fan, so it was cool to get to shake hands and have a few words with him. If anyone has any questions about the NAMM show, let me know, I'll try to answer them. I did check out a few booths and catch some cool new products. later Bill Cincinnati ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 13:29:39 -0600 From: "Bill Broadway" Subject: Re: Mahler >What are you doing bookmarking his page? Bill ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 1998 12:40:09 -0600 From: "Ellingford" Subject: Van Halen reunion just not in the cards (long and lots of VH) This is an article in the paper toady, so I copied it and thought you might like to see it. Even if you aren't a fan of the band, you have to root for Van Halen's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Just watching which lead singer steps up to the microphone at the ceremony would be worth the en-shrinement. "In five years we're eligible," bassist Michael Anthony said. "If they ask us to perform, that's going to be a preeetty interesting scenario. Everybody start saving your money to buy your tickets to Cleveland now." Van Halen comes to Denver and Fiddler's Green Thursday with it's third lead singer. Two years ago, promoters were betting on a blockbuster tour that could fill stadiums with David Lee Roth back high-kicking his way across stage. That was after Roth, the group's original singer, stepped back into the Van Halen fold for two songs on a greatest hits album. But that was before the other three members of Van Halen decided to continue on without Roth or his successor, Sammy Hagar. Instead, they tapped ex-Extreme singer Gary Cherone to sing. "You hate to see things like this happen," Anthony said. A quick recap: Roth was the band's original singer, fronting the band from it's heavy metal, California club days to its chart-topping, radio friendly era of 1984. Then Roth left for a solo career and an endless war of words with the embittered Van Halen camp. Hagar stepped in, and the Red Rocker handled vocal for four more best-selling albums. But then he left in 1996 under disputed circumstances. Hagar said he was fired. The rest of Van Halen said he succumbed to LSD - Lead Singer Disease. Just as when Roth left, the two sides battled it out in the press. "There wouldn't have been anything from the Van Halen camp at all if it weren't prompted from what Dave or Sammy said," Anthony said. "When Sammy left, it was amicable, to tell you the truth. When Sammy left, he wanted to be a solo artist again, and the last thing he said to Ed was, 'I hope that if you ever change your phone number that you give it to me.' When it came out in the press, and he was slagging us and saying that he was fired and everything, we said, 'Hey, we had enough of this when Roth left the band, and we don't want to go through it again.' And we didn't think it was going to happen." But it did, and the band had another dilemma to deal with. Not only were fans wondering what happened with Hagar, there were new issues with Roth as well. After putting aside long-standing differences to record two new songs on a greatest hits album, it looked like Roth and Van Halen were back together again. But egos blew up at the MTV Video Music Awards, and the long-awaited reunion tour wasn't to be. "There might have been a reunion tour if everything went well, but the chemistry just wasn't there anymore," Anthony said. "And all the fans wanted it, they were thinking 1984 all over again. Well, it wasn't 1984 again. People change and times are different." That's when they went with Cherone, walking away from a huge payday with Roth. "Yeah we were getting huge offers coming in from promoters," the bassist said. "We could have done that, gone out and done the Kiss thing, put on our old Van Halen makeup and done it. But, you know, none of us needs the money that bad to want to do it for that purpose." Van Halen's first new album with Cherone, 3, hasn't been the big success of the efforts from the Hagar or Roth era. A tad darker, more aggressive and lacking the undeniable radio-ready hooks, 3 has already slipped off the charts. "It's not like we're really trying to prove something as much as we are just trying to go out there and be ourselves," Anthony said. "If you don't like it, what can you do? If we cared as much about that we would have kept Dave in the band when he came back to do those two songs." And Cherone is the last lead singer the rest of the band --- Anthony and Alex and Eddie Van Halen --- intends to have. "Eddie has said that he would take up the tube if this thing doesn't work out," Anthony said. "God help the tuba players of the world if this doesn't work out." Anyone wanting a reunion --- with Roth or Hagar --- will just have to wait for five years to see who gets on stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ----------------------------------------------------------------Written by Michael Mehle, Rocky Mountain News, popular music columnist 7/12/98 Thanks for the time you took to read it, I thought Mikey's quotes were kind of insightful.
