When I typed in the info I was expecting it to come back that there were only lawn seats left but to my surprise they were lower pavillion seats. When I ordered my tickets on 6/6/98, they said that the lower pavillion was sold out. What's up with this? I have a quick question: Who is the cover band playing for the Con in Vegas this year? Is it the Atomic Punks again? I just got this hilarious video of one of their club shows and it must be fairly recent because I dont remember "Eddie" looking like the guitarist filling that spot in the vid from when I saw them a few years back. Don't get me wrong, they are a fantastic cover band but when "Dave" is getting people in the audience to sing the last line in Ice Cream Man and one guy addresses him sincerly as Dave- well, I fell on the floor dyin'... Also, shouldn't it be mandatory to bring a lightning rod to the con? Did anyone hear about the several hotels that got struck by the severe lightning storm last night and caught fire? All of those above have some extremely classic tunes on them. The one I couldn't wait to hear the most was Dave's new one, seeing as how everyone on the List has been talking about it for so long now. I won't give a long and detailed review like Rex usually does, but here's my take on the songs: "Slam Dunk"-pretty cool. Sounds vaguely familiar to "Hot for Teacher" "Black Light"-I think it sounds a lot like Led Zep, and Dave's vocals sorta resemble a deep-voiced Robert Plant. "Counter-Blast"-no thoughts here, but once again another track that sounds like HFT, only at the end though. "Lose the Dress..."-eh, so-so. "Little Texas"-resembles "Don't Piss Me Off" a bit. "King of the Hill"-I don't know about anyone else, but the minute I heard the bass groove in the intro I immediately thought of AIC's "Damn That River" from "Dirt". "Going Places"-reminded me of "Damn Good", but I thought the intro was too long. For a while I was beginning to think it was an instrumental. "Wa Wa Zat!"-eh, cool. "Relentless"-this tune just kicks ass, simply put. "Indeedido"-not houghts on this one. "Right Tool"-nice blues turn on this one, Dave. "Tight"-another awesome tune; I thought his voice sounded almost identical to "Me Wise Magic". "Weekend with the Babysitter"-boring. "Black Sand"-a very un-Dave-like track, but it works I was impressed with this one. My faves on this disc were "King", "Black Sand", "Right Tool", "Relentless", and Tight". And after repeated listening I saw what everyone meant when they mentioned the EVH-influences here. Sounds like he needs to work on his voice a bit more, and he was relying on whatever effects they could muster up to enhance his voice. I think he tried to hard on some songs to sound like the Dave of years gone by, and you can definitely hear it. I think, had the reunion worked out, that "Slam Dunk" could have easily been a new VH song. It sounds so much like the old VH that it's not even funny. You'd have to be deaf not to notice it. Overall, Dave did a great job here. He obviously had fun making this disc, and it shows. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 7.5. And IMO, had VH given Dave more time to work on his voice and strengthen it up instead of just tossin' him into the fire like they did, yes, the reunion would've worked. I've been wanting to say that for the longest time. =V= ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 20:30:17 -0600 From: KC Subject: RE: July 20th - Day of the Friend Hi , I want to wish all of you "Happy day of the friend", because here in Argentina, we celebrate this today July 20th.... Rack 'o Records and I have fess up to having most of their catalog on lp up to "Rock The Nations". The second and last time I saw them live was at this decent sized club in Anaheim called Jezebels in 1987 I think and they were touring behind the above lp and turned in a pretty good show considering that year was the beginning of a swift downward slide for them. The only CD I have is "Power and Glory" which I believe is pretty rare as it has some song called Midas Touch instead of Suzi Hold On which I'd say was my favorite Saxon tune. One thing that stuck in my head was that the singer aways had a big fan mounted on the floor pointed up to blow his hair around while he sang. Name an 80's metal band and I probably have some goofy story to tell about 'em.
