I spent about a week playing my way all the way through it and I have drawn one inescapable conclusion. It sucks. ;-) Unreal rocks and rocks hard, as far as graphics go. It's beautiful and the engine may well kick some serious ass when it's used with another game (like Duke Nukem Forever), but the weapons and opponents in Unreal aren't entertaining to me. When I fire the Rail Gun into an unsuspecting opponent in Quake II I get rewarded for my stealth and skill by seeing his guts spray all over the wall. After I beat the shit out of the 9-foot-tall Predator-looking fucks in Unreal for 10 minutes with a pop gun they fall down and groan. The AI in Unreal is great, but all that means is that the lame-assed weapons aren't good enough to keep you alive a lot of the time. There's just no feeling of kicking ass like you get when you frag some useless grunt fuck in Quake II. Rex's review? Great engine. Lousy game. - -Rex. ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 13:58:16 +1000 From: Mark Johnson Subject: Aussie shows (was RE: The Jumbotron) I'm curious...Did anyone else on the list go to the Newcastle show? But I still think it is killer..... though it is probably more of a "Awe" factor than anything.... But Man, Like you said I can't wait to see what the guys at 3Drealms/GTinteractive do with that engine for "Duke Nukem Forever". You just know that the Gameplay will remain consistent through that *when* they get finished with it. P.S. You have to admit that in one of the first levels where you are in the long dark hallway... and the lights above your head go off one by one toward you till it is Pitch Dark..... and one of those monster fucks comes outta the walls is one of the Most *Dramatic* moments yet to hit a PC Game..... later sleepy - who is Off to bed. Yep! You're on the money there! The thing about that scene that blew it for me is that Gamespot ran a story over a year ago describing that scene in detail so it didn't have that shock value. The engine really does kick ass, though. The thing is, Quake II doesn't have very many (barely any) "scripted" scenes like that and I still get off every time I walk into some gun-toting asshole. ;-) I'll bet the Unreal engine is gonna be a monster when Duke Nukem Forever comes out, though.
